Kitty King’s eight-year-old Kantango started his season with a bang, jumping out of the Start Box at Riseholm College Lincoln Horse Trials and coming home with a win in the Advanced Intermediate on Friday 14th March.
It was just the second run this season for Kitty’s up and coming star, who took runner-up spot in the FEI WBFSH World Young Horse Championships at Le Mondial Du Lion last year and he did it in style, adding just 7.2 time penalties on cross country to his dressage score for a win on 31.7.
Argentina’s Sebastian Roldan Olivera took second place riding Islandwood The Rising (37.8) and Jack Mantel riding Jack Daniels, the only combination to make the time on cross country in this class, took third (38).

Not surprisingly, Oliver Townend and his two 5* winners, Ballaghmor Class and Cooley Rosalent took the two Open Intermediate sections. Ballaghmor Class cruised around to finish on his dressage score of 25.7. But he couldn’t afford to be any slower with Tom Jackson riding My Star Turn also finishing on his dressage score of 25.9 and Australia’s silver medal winning horse Shadow Man with Ben Hobday in the saddle, the leader after dressage, finished third on 27.6 in the Section E.
Cooley Rosalent started with a very impressive dressage score of 21.8 but opted for a slightly more sedate pace on cross country, coming home with 4.4 time to win on 26.2 ahead of another very talented young horse, Barrington Alice ridden by Izzy Taylor (30.3) and another past ride of Oliver’s, Ridire Dorcha in third (38.8) with his young rider, Lucy Stimson.

Bubby Upton claimed the Intermediate on Shannondale Bertie, while Jeanette Brakewell riding Primiro claimed the BE100 Open, Ros Canter riding Club Class won the BE100 Section A and Lizzie Baugh riding Tysons Upto Trix went one better than at Oasby (1) last week, winning the BE100 Section B.
An Eventful Life is filming all competitors on cross country all three days and keep an eye on our socials for snippets during the event. We’ll be back with a quick update on Saturday and Sunday plus full wrap up and lots of photos next week!
