It really is a family affair at the Magic Millions Festival of British Eventing. Not only is the event now jointly run by Captain Mark Phillips and his son Peter at the Princess Royal’s home at Gatcombe Park but the organisers are aiming to make it a family friendly event for spectators and riders
This was highlighted last year when the winner of the CIC3* British Open Championship, Chris Burton was joined on the podium following the formal presentation by his wife Bek and son Harry, who took great interest in his dad’s trophy!
One of the longest running events in the calendar, The Magic Millions Festival of British Eventing at Gatcombe Park this year celebrates its 36th of competition and will once again host the British Championship classes. The five Championships are;
The Magic Millions British Open Championship
The Smith & Williamson British Intermediate Championship
The Dodson & Horrell British Novice Championship
The TopSpec Challenge for the Corinthian Cup
The ROR/NTF Retrained Racehorse Event Championship.
Course designer and joint organiser Captain Mark Phillips says that “It is the only event in the world where you have five British Championships. That is what makes it such a special weekend with top class competition and a host of entertainment for the whole family to enjoy. The Festival has always set out to be the very best level competition from when it started in the ’80s. Also, we aim to make it a family event for spectators, not just a championship for the riders, and we go to a lot of trouble to look after owners.”
Captain Mark Phillips talks to Sam Lloyd about this year’s Festival
Although Chris Burton won the main class last year, as an Australian he could win the British Championship which went to Izzy Taylor on Be Touchable. Here they are on their way to becoming the 2018 British Open Champions
