Four days of top class eventing at BE90 to Open Intermediate levels are about to get underway at Oasby (1)

One of the most popular early season events thanks to the venue’s free draining soil and a cross country course designed specifically for those having the first hit out of the year, Oasby has 33 sections of competition running from Thursday 10th to Sunday 13th March and a waitlist to boot!

Thursday and Friday see many of the big names competing in the Novice and Intermediate classes. World Number One Oliver Townend, World Champion Ros Canter, European Champion Nicola Wilson, Piggy March, Izzy Taylor, Olympic gold medallists Laura Collett and Tom McEwen are just a few competing and most have multiple rides from young horses just starting out to Championship medallists

Australia and New Zealand are well represented too with Bill Levett, Sammi Birch, Samantha Lissington, James Avery, Ginny Thompson and the newly arrived Clarke Johnstone competing and, while we no longer have Chris Burton and Sam Griffiths competing at top level eventing, we’ll be keeping an eye out for Bubby Upton on two of their past rides – Jefferson 18 and Billy Liffy – in the Open Intermediate on Friday

While Friday is all about the Intermediate horses, including an Open Intermediate U21, the Novice classes and BE100 classes return on Saturday, along with the Pony Trial (one of our favourite things is to watch these guys scoot around the Oasby track!) and Sunday wraps up four days of competition with mainly BE90 classes

This is also one of the first British Eventing competitions to require completion of the new EHV Equine Self Certification.  All BE events now require that a completed form be submitted prior to arrival, in keeping with the new FEI Horse Health rulings in place this year at international competitions

The self-certification process requires a health declaration to be submitted to the event organiser 24 hours before arrival and can be completed by either the groom or rider.

Helen West, Chief Executive for British Eventing says that “Whilst it is only an official requirement for international competitions where national classes may, or may not, be included within the schedule we felt it was best practice in the interests of equine welfare that we made it a standard requirement for the season ahead across all events within our calendar.

It only takes one horse to be at an event for there to be an outbreak and we feel it is important to ensure we do all we can to minimise the risk”

We’ll be at Oasby, filming all competitors on cross country and bringing you updates on the website, plus our full subscriber-only wrap-up next week

Don't forget to stay tuned to our Facebook, Instagram and Twitter for video snippets and more during the event too ...
