The county of Cheshire has really been hit hard by wet weather in the last few weeks and finally, after two days of competition at Kelsall Hill Equestrian Centre, the event at Kelsall Hill (2) had to succumb
The venue at Kelsall Hill has fantastic ground which held up remarkably well despite all the recent rain and the show jumping was moved to the all-weather surface arenas but sadly, with more rain forecast and difficulties getting horses in and out of the venue, the final day of competition on Sunday had to be abandoned, including the Airowear BE80(T) Championships
Despite the weather conditions, many riders still went home happy after a successful day’s eventing including Australian Olympian Andrew Hoy on his French bred Vassily De Lassos, winner of the Open Intermediate class on Saturday.
The 10-year-old by Jaguar Mail has been judiciously campaigned by Andrew this year to produce three top six finishes at 4* level, including fifth places at Luhmuhlen and Aachen while his only two cross country runs at national level have been here at Kelsall Hill. We met Vassily De Lassos’ owners Paula and David Evans at Kelsall Hill in April (in very different climatic conditions) when they told us more about how a crushed collar bone at a Wobbleberry training day with Andrew led Paula and her husband David to become owners of Vassily De Lassos and their amazing experience at the World Equestrian Games in Tryon – you can hear that interview here

James Adams riding Quinara won the Intermediate Section M and Hayden Hankey won the Intermediate N on Fools In Love, a horse that has become a bit of a media sensation with over 500,000 views so far of a snippet of video on our Facebook page since he and Hayden survived a ‘moment’ in the water at Blair Castle where they finished ninth
Hayden certainly has a very good team of horses at the moment – his mare Cartown Galaxy, won the CCI2*-L at Blair Castle where he told us more about his team of horses
James Adams won the Intermediate Section M on the seven-year-old mare Quinara owned by James and Laura De Wesselow. James spoke to Nick Wood about the mare that ‘really makes me smile’

Five sections of BE100 also competed on Saturday with Michael Owen and Monbeg Horizon winning the BE100 Section H on their dressage score of 24.8
Michael is between 5* events, having competed at Burghley and heading to Pau on Bradeley Law, who is owned by Heather Owen, also the owner of the five-year-old Monbeg Horizon
The BE100 Section I was won by Bethany Humphries on Brian’s Best, adding just 0.4 time penalties to their dressage score of 20, the BE100 U18 was taken out by Lucy Cordett riding Escaday who started with a fabulous dressage score of 18.8 and finished on 22 and Hattie Mccance won the BE100 Section J on Lord Larry
BE100Open Section K was won by Charlotte Clewlow riding Wenback Paddy and she told Nick Wood more about Paddy's first win at this level
