Saturday at Burnham Market International
After three days of fabulous eventing action across the classes at the Barefoot Retreats Burnham Market International, the event drew to a close on Sunday with the big finale of the CCI3*-S and CCI4*-S classes
Laura Collett had dominated Saturday’s proceedings, not only leading the CCI4*-S Section B on Mr Bass (24) and in second place on Dacapo (25.1) but also leading the CCI4*-S Section C on London 52. They then all followed this up with clear show jumping rounds however Laura had already decided not to run them on cross country due to the firm ground and with an eye on what may be happening at a VERY big event in the near future.
“We’re just saving them hopefully for bigger things later in the season, but it has been a great couple of days” said Laura “It’s nice to be sitting up there (at the top of the leader boards) after the show jumping but there is not one part of me that thinks we should have gone cross country and I think it was the right decision for my horses at this time.” More to come in an interview with Laura in our full wrap up …
That left the door open in both sections and two other top lady riders and their horses marched on in.
Piggy March and Kitty King swopped wins and second places in both sections with Kitty claiming the CCI4*-S Section B on board Cristal Fontaine and Piggy in second place on her Badminton winner Vanir Kamira.
In the CCI4*-S Section C it was Piggy who took top honours on Dargun while Kitty was in second place riding her other ‘French’ horse Vendredi Biats. Izzy Taylor took third place in this section on Monkeying Around and Gemma Tattersall riding Chilli Knight claimed third place in the Section B.

Following a win on Forest Gump 124 at the South of England last weekend, Tom Jackson was on fine form again in both 4* classes here with three top six placings; sixth in the Section B on Firefly plus fourth and fifth in the Section C on Capel’s Hollow Drift and Billy Cuckoo. Tom has real depth in his team of horses at the moment and could really be one to watch this year
Australian riders were also in action with Chris Burton’s two horses both show jumping clear; Jefferson 18 finished in 16th place and Leopard’s Action in 20th place and, while Bill Levett may not have the best results with his two 4* horses, Lates Quin and Huberthus AC, finishing down the leader board but he was happy with how they ‘will all have come on from this experience’. Sligo Candy Cane, Bill’s ride in the CCI3*-S, finished in 14th place but it was Oliver Townend who claimed yet another Burnham Market win in this class on Cooley Rosalent. It seems that past winners and placegetters at Le Mondial Du Lion came to the fore at Burnham Market this weekend with Kitty King’s Cristal Fontaine (6-Year-Old Champion 2018), Izzy Taylor’s Monkeying Around (6-Year-Old Champion 2017) and Oliver’s Cooley Rosalent (Reserve Champion 6-Year-Old 2019) all doing well
Oliver and the grey mare Cooley Rosalent finished on their dressage score of 26 and, when the overnight leader Caroline Powell riding Rock Midnight added 20 penalties on cross country and some other combinations in contention withdrew, two young riders moved up to take second and third places.
Daisy Proctor riding Quarry Man, who won the CCI3*-S here in 2019 with Lizzie Baugh, also finished on their dressage score of 28.8 for second place while Oliver Jackson and Victor Krum took third place on 31.
New Zealand’s James Avery finished just off the podium in fourth place on board Sportsfield Lord Livesey
