Sunday at the NAF Hartpury International was another day of extreme weather following Saturday’s windy, showery weather with heavy downpours late on the final day of CCI2*-L and CCI3*-L competition
The competitors in the Hartpury MPower CCI2*-L had the best conditions of the day with a sunny morning for their show jumping phase and it was a clear round that sealed the deal for Harriett Beaumont on Annaghmore Bonita
Finishing on their dressage score of 29.6 ahead of Mark Davidson on Striding Edge (29.9) and Charlotte Rowe on Redbarn Luxury Biscuit (31.3), Harriett celebrated her first-ever international win
The intermittent heavy rain and thunder in the afternoon forced competitors to canter for cover in the indoor arena as they were warming up but the various holds in competition as the storms rolled through didn’t deter yesterday’s 4* winner, Piggy French, from also winning the NAF Five Star Superflex CCI3*-L on Brookfield Quality. It was however a win of ‘totally mixed emotions’ for Piggy who was delighted for the owners of Brookfield Quality but was disappointed for Susie Berry, the talented young Irish rider based at Piggy’s yard who so nearly won the class
Piggy and Brookfield Quality won on a score of 31.4 after incurring 0.4 time penalties in the show jumping and when the overnight leader Susie jumped clear on John The Bull everyone, including Piggy and Susie, thought she had it in the bag. But 0.8 time penalties cost her the win, finishing in second place on a score of 31.6, well ahead of third placed Charlotte Dennis, a rider recently recovered from a broken back, on Mount Panther (37.3)
