Many of those competing at the Little Downham Horse Trials on 24th and 25th July went home with sunburned noses as the good weather continued for the popular event in Cambridgeshire
Little Downham prides itself on providing high quality experiences for competitors and spectators, be they first time grassroots entrants or world renowned riders. Tina Ure (site owner, BE accredited trainer, course designer and event organiser) is heavily involved in course building. Her building ethos is to provide a fair and well constructed course for each height that is both challenging and educational, and is always well received and enjoyed by spectators and competitors alike.
The Ely Eventing Centre has run the very successful Little Downham Horse Trials for British Eventing for the past 14 years. The organising team with one event per season from Intro to Novice unveiled an Advanced track in 2010 and now run three affiliated events. The introduction of a new BE80(T) track and the BE105 have added to the appeal of the event at lower levels, along with the Protexin Equine Premium Grassroots Accumulator for the BE90 and BE100 classes, following the success of their Novice Accumulator series in 2015. An end of season cash prize pot of £1400 to BE90 and BE100 competitors is certainly attracting interest!
Sophie Miller and Kilmastulla Newmarket - winners KBIS 4YO Qualifier
Last weekend the event ran 18 sections from BE80(T) to Novice which included the KBIS 4YO Section E1, a qualifier for the Young Horse 4 Year Old Championships held at Osberton International in October, won by Sophie Miller riding Kilmastulla Newmarket. The 16.3 gelding is by Newmarket Venture, sire of Nicola Wilson’s 4* mare Annie Clover, who won on his dressage score of 30 penalties
Caroline Powell and Stracathro Solitary Mistral
New Zealand’s Caroline Powell had three horses competing and took home two winners with Stracathro Solitary Mistral winning the Tiggas BE100 Section O and the Baileys Horse Feeds Novice Section J riding Flipper K while Oliver Townend won the Baileys Horse Feeds Novice Section I riding Gortglas Crazy Love
Australia's Emma Dougall came a close second to Caroline Powell in the BE100 Section O, just 0.4 penalties behind on the very Australian sounding INXS!
Kelly Cradduck and Castana Bay
While these experienced riders are used to winning their sections, it was a first time win for Kelly Cradduck in the BE90 Open Section E on her eight year old mare Castana Bay, finishing on their dressage score of 27. This was only their second competition after coming back from a year off due to a broken collar bone and since returning they have clocked up a second place at Eridge last weekend and now a win. Kelly’s other ride Morning Ambition, a six year old mare by Chilli Morning at just her third event started extremely well with a very good 14.3 dressage score, but sadly they were eliminated on cross country.
