Two popular riders who have previously represented their country at Olympic Games are out of contention for Tokyo 2020 selection

Germany’s Ingrid Klimke injured herself in a fall on cross country course at Baborówko in Poland last weekend.

Via social media Ingrid advised that she had sustained a severe injury to her chest, left shoulder and ribs, necessitating surgery

"The operation in Munster (on Monday) went well and now I need time to rest and heal," she wrote on her Facebook page. "I'm very sad because my biggest dream - riding at my sixth Olympic Games - is now gone."

She does however hope to be able to defend her European Eventing Championship title in Switzerland in September.

Brazil’s Ruy Fonseca has also removed himself from selection for Tokyo following a recent family bereavement saying that “With the recent personal private events and my focus is completely in support my family brothers and sisters, we decided to withdraw from targeting the Tokyo Olympic Games qualification and selection process which would be my 4th Olympic Games”

Ruy’s last Olympic participation was competing at his home Olympic Games in Rio, Brazil in 2016
