Multi-Tamworth winner Hazel Shannon is overseas - who will take her place on the podium in 2022?

After the first events of the season in NSW and Queensland were cancelled due to floods and extreme wet weather, eventers in these areas of Australia are making sure they don’t miss out on the Tamworth International One Day Event on 26th & 27th March
More than 400 riders are competing at the Australian Equine and Livestock Events Centre (AELEC) in Tamworth, NSW this weekend with classes running from EvA45 up to CCI4*-S
The Equilume CCI4*-S will see 25 of Australia’s top competitors battling it out with Shane Rose riding his silver medal winning horse Virgil at their first international start since Tokyo as well as Dreamcatcher and Be My Daisy and fellow Olympian Stuart Tinney on board Dalenna Daydream. Stuart’s daughter Gemma is on board Diabolo, who took second place in the CCI4*-S at Sydney International last year behind winners Sam Lyle riding BF Valour who are also competing here
Newly weds Andrew Cooper and Madeline Wilson are heading to their first CCI4* of the year from Queensland with Andrew matching Shane with three in the CCI4* - Hey Arnold, Manhattan and Omega Star – and Madeline bringing the big bay mare Annie Jane
Matt Gaske is also coming across the border with his mare Bellhaven Cumbria in this class and the more local rider, Andrew Barnett is starting Go Tosca, a horse that has had much success coming up through the grades including wins as their last two CCI3* starts, at his first CCI4*
There are a host of other great combinations in the feature class including Heath Ryan on Bronze Boy R, Emma Bishop riding CP Issey Miyake and Jess Rae on both Rascal and Fifth Avenue, making it one of the most competitive fields we’ve seen in a while. There is one combination we’ll be missing in the multi-Tamworth winner, Hazel Shannon and Willingapark Clifford who have won this class five times in the past six years (they came second in 2019!) as they are currently preparing for Badminton in the UK at the home of Kevin and Emma McNab – we have a video interview with Hazel coming up very soon
Dressage and show jumping for the 4* take place on Saturday with riders enjoying the benefits of the huge Ebb and Flow arena at AELEC, one of Australia’s top venues. Cross country for all classes is on Sunday, except for the EvA80 and EvA95 classes which take to the cross country on Saturday afternoon
The joy of being back eventing in NSW after such a period of devastation in the State is also tinged with sadness following the death of Rachel Watts, a close friend of many competing this weekend.
To mark Rachel’s passing, the organisers are making available armband ribbons and a minute’s silence will be observed in remembrance and recognition of Rachel at the end of the CCI4* show jumping on Saturday evening
We're filming all competitors on cross country and bringing you updates on the website, plus our full subscriber-only wrap-up next week. And don't forget to stay tuned to our Facebook, Instagram and Twitter for video snippets and more during the event
