With a new venue and completely new course at Thoresby Park, the first cross country day was always going to prove interesting and there were some shake-ups on the leader board after Saturday’s action at Osberton International and Young Event Horse Championships.

In the CCI3*-L, Izzy Taylor and the eight-year-old Hartacker maintained their lead with a master class double clear cross-country through the Thoresby parkland. Another very experienced competitor, Piggy March had no problems on board Sportsfield Top Notch to maintain second place and Mark Davidson riding Highlight K also delivered a double clear to move into third place when Amy O’Connor and Sankro were one of the 13 to be eliminated on course

New Zealand’s James Avery slipped down the leader board with steady clear rounds on his new DHI rides but Sportsfield Lord Livesey has moved up to sixth place while Australia’s Brook Staples and Bella English also delivered clear rounds but with time penalties to now be in 55th and 61st places

       Jamie-Lee Day and Hanleen Didjeridoo

The CCI2*-L class also had its fair share of eliminations on course, including the overnight leader Emily King riding Imposant. Jamie-Lee Day and the eight-year-old, Hanleen Didjeridoo are making their long trip from North Somerset a successful one, moving up from fourth place and now leading the class after dressage and cross-country on their dressage score of 26.

This is equalled by second placed Emily Young-Jamieson riding Obos Nidge while Caroline Harris riding Cadannus lies in third place (26.8) but they all need to look over their shoulder as Izzy Taylor is looming very close behind in fourth place on 26.9 riding Hathaway Whole Lotta Love. With less than a rail between the top 13 in this class and the top eight in the 3*-L, it will be a very exciting finish tomorrow in the show jumping

While the long format classes were out on cross country, the Young Horse Championship short format competitors were in the show jumping ring.

       Tom Jackson and HH Moonwalk

Surrey-based Tom Jackson is now in first place in the British Eventing Seven-Year-Old Championship with a smart clear show jumping round on board HH Moonwalk moving them up to pole position with 26.4 penalties when the overnight leader, William Fox-Pitt and Under Oath fell by the wayside after five fences hit the ground.

UK-based Frenchman Gaspard Maksud and Zaragoza II have moved up to second place with a good clear round leaving him on his dressage score of 29.3 penalties and Irish rider Susie Berry riding Wellfields Lincoln are in third place, with the Luidam gelding also moving up the leader board after a clear round.

In the British Eventing Six-Year-Old Championship with dressage and show jumping complete, Piggy French and the attractive grey, Cooley Goodwood maintain the lead they claimed after the first phase. Owned by Susie Wood, the Obos Quality gelding gave the show jumps plenty of room to score a clear round and keep their first place with 24.6 penalties.

Cheshire-based Hayden Hankey and Head’s Up moved to second position thanks to their clear show jumping while Bubby Upton and Cooley As Ice dropped a place after one of the coloured poles fell.

On Sunday the Young Horse competitors have their chance to tackle Stuart Buntine’s new courses at Thoresby Park and no doubt many will be re-walking it after watching some of Saturday’s competitors incur costly errors of course, with several competitors eliminated due to missing jumps!
