One star wonders at Sydney Eventing Summer Classic

       Stuart Tinney and Diabolo

The Randwick Equine CIC1* was the first class on course on Sunday morning at the Sydney Eventing Summer Classic and it was a bit of a surprise when the first rider Shane Rose had a problem at the ditch at Fence 8 on board Togo but it soon seemed that this definitely was the bogey fence of the day.

Sappho Ransan-Elliott presented next on her first ride, SR Penhaligon who also took a dislike to the well-constructed ditch, refusing twice before finally getting over.

A few competitors in both the CIC1* and CNC1* had problems here but not Stuart Tinney and Diabolo, winners of the CIC1* who jumped it with ease, despite the fact that this young horse, usually ridden by Stuart’s daughter Gemma, was having his first start at this level and finishing on his dressage score of 32.20 (listen to our interview with Stuart about his wins in the CIC1* and CIC2* here)

Sappho returned with Windjana Romanette later in this class and jumped the ditch without problems this time, joining Stuart as the only other rider to complete the 1* course without time or jump penalties, and finishing in second place on 39.80

Carlene Barton joined her daughter Olivia, who won the CNC3*, in the rosette stakes taking home third place in this class on the seven year old mare APH Witchcraft who looks like being another of their homebred stars. They moved from eighth after the dressage into third thanks to a clear show jumping round and just 3.2 time penalties on cross country

The winner of the Beecroft Physio CNC1* shows that age is not necessarily a barrier when a horse wins a class at the age of 20. The 20 year old CeCe Moscato and his rider Rachael Temm, also 20 years old, were second after the dressage, show jumped clear and then added just two time penalties on cross country to win on 37.20.

Previously ridden by Madeline Wilson a few years ago, Rachael has been riding CeCe Moscato for a while and he seems to be relishing his new lease of life

Jess Rae was the fastest around the CNC1* cross country with just 0.8 time penalties on Fifth Avenue and took second place close behind Rachael with a score of 38.30 while Kristina Silk on Dunrostan was third

The leader after the dressage was a young man with a familiar name having his first 1* start. Oliver Barrett, the son of two 4* eventing parents, Prue and Craig, and Ballyhoo scored 32.10 in the dressage, added nine penalties in the show jumping and then jumped around the 1* track, making it look easy to add just four time penalties.

Oliver finished in fourth place in the CNC1* plus won the Horseland EvA105 Junior on board the homebred Sandhills Special and we had our first ever interview from the young Barrett!
